Redefine Corn Refuge

Seed corn companies are sticking to their RIBs. Additional refuge-in-the-bag -- better known as RIB seed blends -- have gained clearances for 2013 planting. That's good news for growers seeking more alternatives that include the added convenience of a built-in refuge.

It turns out blends of hybrids that pair non-insect-traited refuge seed and Bt-protected corn into a single bag also appear to be a better way to delay the development of pest resistance to Bt. A three-year research project shepherded by University of Illinois entomologist Joe Spencer is shaking up some long-held general assumptions about western corn rootworm behavior.
