DECATUR, Ill. (DTN) -- John and Dean Werries jumped on the cover crop bandwagon in 2012 by seeding nearly 3,800 acres to annual ryegrass. That fall the grass soaked up nitrogen left over from the 2012 crop. Their strip-till, corn-after-corn yields answered by averaging 234 bushels per acre.

"We know that wasn't all due to cover crops, but we feel returning that nitrogen to the soil and other aspects of the practice did contribute," said John Werries. Last fall, the father-and-son team from Concord, Ill., seeded another 3,800 acres and learned that not everything about cover cropping is foolproof.
