MUTING MAIZE GENES

DuPont Pioneer scientists have used a gene-silencing technique to produce corn plants that yield better under drought stress. By genetically suppressing the plant's biosynthesis of the stress hormone ethylene, they were able to increase grain yield in transgenic corn plants that underwent drought stress during flowering. The transgenic corn plants emitted 50% less ethylene than conventional plants. Pioneer scientists believe normal levels of the stress hormone may have limited corn yield in the past.
