Ag Supports Immigration Bill

OMAHA (DTN) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture would play a major role in operating a new agricultural guest-worker program under the proposed immigration reform bill released this week in the U.S. Senate.

Rather than setting a hard cap on new foreign workers or leaving decision-making to the Department of Labor, the legislation would give the secretary of agriculture authority to adjust the cap on the number of agricultural guest workers allowed into the country each year. Farmers and ranchers would also have to submit written records of foreign workers to USDA annually.
