STATE 'BUY AMERICAN' LEGISLATION COULD RUN AFOUL OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE COMMITMENTS

A number of states are considering legislation that would require them to contract with or buy only from companies whose products are produced in the United States. Some proposals would be even more restrictive, requiring purchases and contracting only within a state. These possibilities have alarmed the National Foreign Trade Council which is urging state legislators and governors to reject any such legislation.
