WASHINGTON (DTN) -- The across-the-board budget cuts facing the country in less than two weeks again highlight the conflicts in Washington pitting largely urban Democrats unwilling to cut nutrition programs against largely rural Republicans who have proven just as unwilling to cut farm programs.

Democrats have proposed a way to avoid cuts to social programs and government workers, but Republicans and farm groups counter that the plan relies too heavily on farmers to bear the brunt of the budget cuts.
