Farm Bill Defeated in House

OMAHA (DTN) -- Despite a weary appeal from Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Okla., to pass the bill, the House voted 195 to 234 not to pass its $940 billion farm bill Thursday.

“If you don’t (pass it), they’ll say it’s a broken institution,” Lucas told the floor before the final vote. “You know that’s not true.”

Nevertheless, 62 Republicans joined 172 Democrats in killing the bill, which made substantial cuts to SNAP, reformed current dairy policy, and approved commodity payment caps, among other amendments.
