OMAHA (DTN) -- The commodity transportation system was one of several things pushed into the public spotlight by 2012's historic drought. Many in the freight industry hope that a focus on the economic importance of rivers, roads and rails will lead to legislative and logistical solutions in 2013.

"You don't like seeing these challenges surface," said Mike Steenhoek, executive director of the Soybean Transportation Coalition, about the near stoppage of barge traffic on the Mississippi River due to low water levels in December and January.
