Senators Seek Funding for PEDv Vaccine

Six Democratic senators have written the chairman and ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture asking for funding for a virus to deal with the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus.

Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., issued a news release Tuesday with a copy of the letter, citing that PEDv has killed six million pigs nationally. "With PEDv having a near 100% mortality rate for piglets under two weeks old, the economic costs to producers is staggering. If PEDv continues to spread at its current rate, many producers could struggle to remain in business. The decreased supply of piglets is causing pork prices to rise for consumers, while emerging diseases such as Swine Delta Corona Virus are impacting many of the same producers harmed by PEDv."

The senators note there is no licensed vaccine for PEDv. Thus, they are requesting funds for USdA's Agricultural Research Service and National Institute for Food and Agriculture programs to better understand study the diseases and create a vaccine. The senators also want more funding for the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service for surveillance efforts.
