Mon Jul 21, 2014 04:53 PM CDT Route 66, for all its tourism and historic lore, is a battered, forgotten road in many areas in every state I have toured thus far. There doesn't seem to be a quick remedy for that anytime soon. Members of Congress are a bit more concerned about simply making the Highway Trust Fund cash flow through the current election cycle rather than look at any kind of road or infrastructure program that would create a lasting fix to protect some of the country's roads from crumbling further.

Under the new farm programs that will be rolled out later this fall, Schnitkey calculated that such price levels could mean ARC payments for Illinois farmers anywhere in the range of $77 per acre to $10 per acre at those price levels. A 200-bushel county average at $3.65 a bushel market-year average could still generate a $45 per acre payment.

Tue Jul 1, 2014 02:58 PM CDT Sometime in the mired five-year rigmarole of the farm bill, I decided I needed to break away from covering agriculture through political spats and the committee rooms of Washington, D.C., and rediscover a little bit of rural America in the process. So I hatched the idea of cruising down the remains of U.S. Route 66 and taking a look at the history, the towns and different kinds of agriculture and farming businesses along the route.
