Council Works to Grow Vietnamese DDGS Market

The market for dried distillers grains with solubles in Vietnam will hopefully grow, thanks to efforts by the U.S. Grains Council, according to an article on the Council's website (…).

Since Vietnamese feed demand is growing, a Council team met with key corn and DDGS customers in Vietnam last month.

With a slowdown of the Vietnamese economy, the country's imports of U.S. DDGS were down year-by-year, as of March by 3%. Last year, an insect infestation was found in some shipments of U.S. DDGS at Vietnam's Port of Hai Phong. The Council responded quickly and assisted in the country's decision to remove DDGS from its quarantine list.

The Council also visited Vietnam's Plant Protection Department to learn about the country's latest import requirements for DDGS and to suggest means of improving trade, especially regarding the practice of surveying all containers in consignment, instead of random selection of 3% to 7%. This practice results in higher DDGS prices for local importers from high demurrage and handling fees. The PPD said they will implement checks and measures to meet with international standards.

A corn and DDGS outlook seminar was held for importers from southern Vietnam to educate attendees on the U.S. and global corn market situation, U.S. DDGS market and exports, and bulk and container transportation market updates.

An introduction to risk management session was also held, prompted by a request from those attending. The session highlighted the high quality of the 2012 U.S. corn crop and DDGS and its reliability and consistency. Several importers expressed interest in booking new shipments for July and August deliveries after the session.
