DDG Prices Fall $3 Per Ton This Week

Spot prices of dried distillers grains fell this week, due mostly to increasing supplies and some built-up inventories during the long weekend.

The DTN weekly DDG spot price average fell from $295 per ton last week to $292 this week, falling $7 in the past month since the record high of $299 per ton during the second week of August. This week's $292 average is the lowest since the last week of July.

Of the 30 Midwestern locations DTN collects prices from, 20 reported their prices had decreased between $2 and $10 dollars per ton, but mostly around $5. Prices remained the same as the week before at eight locations, while two locations reported no offers. No locations increased prices this week.

Merchandisers told DTN that the downward trend in prices this week is due largely to increased production from more ethanol plants up and running. With the shorter week, some plants dropped prices slightly to move out inventory. Also, corn prices were down slightly this week, causing DDG prices to drop slightly as well.

The value of DDG relative to corn this week was at about 102.55%, rising slightly from 101.79% the previous week. The value of DDG relative to soybean meal this week also rose from 53.82% last week to 54.91 this week.

The cost per unit of protein for DDG was $11.68, while the cost per unit of protein for soybean meal was at $11.20.
